Biggest Wins

Leicester City broke a number of records in the history of top-flight football on Friday 25th October 2019 when they travelled to the south coast to face Southampton. The Foxes produced a ruthless display of clinical finishing, routing their woeful opponents.

Southampton might have been down to 10 men as early as the 11th minute after a red card via VAR for Ryan Bertrand. However, the floodgates opened in spectacular fashion as their defenders gave a masterclass of how not to defend. A penalty in stoppage-time by Jamie Vardy secured Leicester’s amazing 9-0 victory. Some of the incredible feats that came out of this match include:

  • Leicester’s 9-0 victory EQUALLED the all-time record for the biggest Premier League victory, achieved by Manchester United 24 years ago against Ipswich Town.
  • The 9-0 margin means it is the BIGGEST away victory, not only in Premier League history but also in the 131-year history of top-flight English football.
  • Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy both scored HAT-TRICKS. This was only the second time this has occurred in Premier League history. The other time was in May 2003 when Jermaine Pennant and Robert Pires scored trebles in Arsenal’s 6-1 win, also against Southampton.
  • The 5-0 half-time lead was only the SECOND time an away side led by five goals at the interval. The last time this had happened was in April 2010 when Manchester City had a similar advantage at Turf Moor against Burnley. They went on to win that encounter 6-1.
  • The 9-0 loss is the biggest-ever defeat in Southampton’s HISTORY in any competition they’ve competed in.
  • Ayoze Perez became the first player to score BACK-TO-BACK hat-tricks against the same opposition since Luis Suarez against Norwich City in 2012. Perez scored a treble against the Saints when playing for Newcastle United in April 2019.

So, we know Leicester’s win broke a manner of league and club records but where does your club ranks in the list of biggest Premier League victories. Here is a list of the biggest 100 wins in Premier League history (50 highest home and 50 highest away victories).
