There was some stiff competition, most notably from Jamie Vardy with his volley against Liverpool FC and Cuco Martina’s curler for Southampton at home to Arsenal. However, this sensational individual effort from Dele Alli was crowned as the Premier League Goal of the Season for 2015-2016 by BBC panellists Alan Shearer and Ian Wright.
Tottenham were involved in a scrappy match at Selhurst Park and were drawing 1-1 with Crystal Palace. The game had entered its final 10 minutes when Alli came up with a sensational piece of brilliance in his maiden campaign in the top-flight.
From Christian Eriksen’s header into his path, Alli’s touch on his instep was superb. With that flick, he lifted the ball over his head before unleashing a 20-yard low volley which was far too good for Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.
His manager Mauricio Pochettino said afterwards: “It was a fantastic goal; it shows his quality and the moment he is in.” Alli went on that season to make his England debut and was crowned PFA Young Player of the Year for the 2015-2016 campaign.
