Despite late stiff competition from Vincent Kompany’s strike against Leicester City, the official Premier League Goal of the Season for 2018-2019 deservedly went to Andros Townsend for his screamer of a strike against the champions at The Etihad Stadium.
Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace side were already giving City a really tough match and had equalised moments earlier through Jeff Schlupp, cancelling out an early Ilkay Gundogan effort. Two minutes after drawing themselves level, the Eagles were infront with a sublime volley from ex-England international Townsend.
The Citizens struggled to clear their lines at a free-kick and when Bernardo Silva wasn’t able to get enough on his clearance, Townsend’s return was emphatic. He connected so sweetly with a 30-yard volley in sublime fashion. From the moment he struck it, the ball was heading straight into the top corner of Ederson’s net. Palace won the game 3-2 and this goal deserved to win any match.
It was nominated for the 2018-2019 Goal of the Year at the FIFA Puskas Awards.
