On-loan from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, Andre Schurrle endured an indifferent return to English football with Fulham in 2018-2019. There were some amazing moments of brilliance from the attacker, which demonstrated why he has a World Cup winners’ medal among his honours.
Schurrle’s personal highlight of the campaign came with this outstanding half-volley in an away trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley in January 2019. Inside the opening two minutes, the German controlled the ball marvellously after a long pass forward by Dennis Odoi. With a first-time strike, he gave Burnley’s returning goalkeeper Tom Heaton little chance of getting anyway near it. Schurrle went on to say his goal here was one of the best of his career.
It was January’s Goal of the Month winner for 2019 but it counted for little. Burnley went on to win the match 2-1. Schurrle’s impact on the season was limited after this encounter as Fulham made an instant return to the Championship after just a single season back in the top-flight.
